Description:
A 60-minute Teams session focused on input from Jenny Sinclair and discussion with colleagues from UK partner schools.
Subsidiarity (‘Responsibility’ in the KS3/4 programme) is a key principle of Catholic Social Teaching. Click here for full definition. Participants will consider subsidiarity in practice, both in school and in the school’s relationship to the local area. In particular, the decisions and responsibilities of pupils, school staff and community partners.
A certificate will be awarded on completion.
Aims:
- To equip staff with working knowledge of subsidiarity to be applied in the classroom, school and local community
- To develop a school’s Christian distinctiveness/Catholic life and mission
Expected outcome:
• Participants will actively bring knowledge of subsidiarity into discussion and planning with pupils, colleagues and community partners, as they engage with local community groups.
Next steps:
• Assess the extent to which subsidiarity is reflected in current community engagement and social action activities in school and with community partners.
• Identify appropriate level of responsibility and decision making for all parties, taking account of pupils, staff and community partners thoughts and needs.
• Implement appropriate changes
Short term impact:
• Students will be able to explain how their learning about subsidiarity/responsibility (CGS programme week 8) is expressed through their community engagement.
• Students’ agency will be demonstrated practically through responsibilities taken and decisions made.
Long term impact:
The dynamic of relationships between participating staff, pupils and community partners reflects the Christian culture of subsidiarity/responsibility.
• Responsibility is taken at the appropriate level and decisions are made closest to where they have effect
• School social action activities shift from service provider dynamic to long-term relationships of reciprocity
